nylon between front and back
Hi
are nylon straps between the front and back halves, attached at the lower corners, approvable, or should I leave them off until after approval and for non-canon events?
thanks
Dave

Re: nylon between front and back
You mean nylon under the black vac-formed straps? If so, they're approvable.

Re: nylon between front and back
My MonCal armor has velcro sizing straps on the bottom to prevent clamshelling (Not sure if it was standard or it was an addition as part of Targ's mod package) and I had no problem getting approved with them. They're not removable anyway.
If people do have an issue with being denied for these straps, we could ask for a change to the CRL to accommodate it, same as the boot sizing straps. I'm a very slim build person myself, and without my straps my armor would flap around like crazy, killing the illusion. Larger members would have the opposite effect, the armor being clamshelled out and again, spoiling the illusion of realism.
If someone at a troop pulls you aside and chews your butt for you having those straps on as "non-canon items", then that's when they need to take a step back and apply some common sense to this hobby. We shouldn't need to have a "canon vs. non-canon" list for common sense things like glasses, sizing straps, etc. We're not all UK extras that all stand 5'-something and have the same body type as the Tie Pilots / TKs / whatever from 1977, and sometimes people need to be reminded that.
Common-sense, that's all I'm saying.

Re: nylon between front and back
I guess I got lucky for my submission pics. I took them with my elastic straps (via the Jawaman kit), and didn't have any problem. My straps are removable though - they attach via snaps on both ends.
Has anyone been denied because of straps? I just re-read the CRL (both on 501st.com and here on JRS), and both of them state nylon straps can be used "to aid in the snug fit of the armor".

D'oh! Sorry about that. Nope, they're not part of the CRL. Just make sure they're not on for your approval photos.davidkturner1970 wrote:no, I mean down at the bottom of the front/back. At the waist area.
I wouldn't worry about wearing them after your approved regardless of if it's a canon event or not. They're black straps on a black background and nobody is going to notice them. I agree with what Lanil said, if somebody gives you grief over the straps they need to reassess why they're doing this. A 5yr old kid taking a picture with you isn't going to care if you have side straps, and chances are his parents aren't either!

Re: nylon between front and back
OK, thanks all for the replies. I'll leave them off until I get approved and then add them in. I'll probably use velcro, hopefully it will stay stuck to the armor and not come off from friction or heat.

nylon between front and back
I have mine attached to the back plate using snaps, and the front with Velcro. The snaps are quite secure, so they stay on all the time, and having the Velcro on the front makes it easy to take the armour on/off and easy to adjust at troops.

Re: nylon between front and back
I have velcro on mine. Can't remember which way around, but I think I have the hook velcro on the armour, and then I made little nylon straps with the other velcro on it, so you can't really notice it. I left mine on for approval. The good part about having both sides removable .. take your approval pics with it in. If the GML doesn't like it .. them pull it off and take the pics again (or just take another lot of pics without it on the same day). If you get your costume approved with it in .. then it is approved and you can wear it on canon troops.

Re: nylon between front and back
I got my armor all assembled. I used 2 6"x1" strips of elastic secured with Velcro to attach the front and back halves at the bottom, Kai's rubber straps at the top. Hardware is a 1"x 1/4" "binding post with screw" covered with a black plastic screw cover. On the armor side where the post comes through I have a 1.25" rubber washer touching the ABS, then a 1" metal washer and then the screw that holds it all together. The only place metal actually touches the ABS is where the post goes through the hole. Hopefully nothing will crack.

Sounds pretty similar to my setup. Been a few years and no issues.davidkturner1970 wrote:Hopefully nothing will crack.
