Armor question about chest piece and the box

Is there any difference between the standard Stormtrooper chest piece and a Tie pilot?
My mother and I are curious about armor components and we found a set and chest box on Etsy and wanted to be sure if it was a problem or not.
I know the pilot piece has this square piece I assume the box sits on, but things like Gideon Hask has the box as optional and the standard Stormtrooper setup. Does that hang on with magnets or clips? And if it does can we use that setup for a Tie pilot?
